Laws. They differ from state to state.
In New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan and Ohio, I never ran into a red-tape buzzsaw in applying for a driver's license.
Had I known what I was going to encounter in Arizona, I might not have relocated here in mid-December 2020.
When I went to the DMV, I didn't expect a pleasant experience. However, I was not prepared to be immediately knocked out of the box because I didn't have a copy of my Social Security card. In the move I had lost it.
Next, when I returned with the acceptable document which contained my Social Security number I was again knocked out the box. The state does not accept a birth certificate issued by a hospital. It has to be from the state's health department vital statistics unit. However, it would accept a passport, active or expired, for a form of driver's license which barred federal travel. I ran home, found the passport, returned and had a license which wouldn't allow me to do any travel involving the feds. Obviously, I wasn't going to be able to cross the border into Mexico for dental tourism. I phoned Humana and signed up for dental insurance.
For New Jersey the state in which I was born, as the internet indicates, it takes about 12 weeks for the birth certificate to be processed. Add onto that the current slowness of snail mail.
Early this week the birth certificate arrived.
When I went to DMV, I was again knocked out of the box. I had to have two kinds of proof of my residence. That was even though I had my address on the license that didn't allow me to travel.
Today I returned to DMV with the two proofs of residence. Interestingly, the clerk informed me that the policy had changed about needing a physical copy of the Social Security card. It is now sufficient to just know the number.
I walked out of the DMV into the desert heat with a paper copy of my AZ license which allows me to travel. The plastic version will arrive in about 10 days.
I wanted to swing by a bar and have a drink to celebrate. I didn't. I feared a DUI. That would mean being pulled back into the jaws of the system of law. Plus, I would have to pony up the funds for a lawyer. But, I still haven't received the $1,400 stimulus check. That has been caught up in red tape because of the move.
