Millennials are looping into YOLO - You Only Live Once.
They made more than enough money. They are experiencing burnout from traditional careerism.
And, so, reports Kevin Roose at The New York Times, they are stepping off the career track. What they are replacing it with could be some hedonistic adventure, developing a startup from a hobby or immersing themselves in an artistic venture such as creating a screenplay (decades ago that would have been a novel).
With demand for legal talent high right now in BigLaw, leadership has to calculate what percentage of Millennial associates will be lost to YOLO. The objective is to prevent the talent from totally exiting.
Programs can be set up, as at Google, in which talented Millennials will be allowed to spend a percentage of their time - paid - to pursue an interest. That does not have to be related to legal tasks, but it could be, directly or indirectly. A direct version would be to mentor minority law students. An indirect one could be to do a short documentary about RVing, personal safety (such as carrying a gun) and the law.
Once the programs are poven out they will be there just-in-time for Generation Z lawyers who are committed to practice law their way. Gen Zers could bring urgency to YOLO - that is, add on an extreme now focus. You bet, we intend to complete that screenplay this year.
Baby Boomers will recall the counterculture template for YOLO. It was: DYOT - Do Your Own Thing. My DYOT was to drop out a doctoral progam (it turned out to be only temporarily) and work for peanuts on Calle de San Francisco in Barcelona, Spain. That was the best of times for my 20s.
