"Dominion Sues MyPillow, CEO Mike Lindell Over Election Claims. The voting-machine maker’s lawsuit alleges defamation, seeks more than $1.3 billion in damages." Alexa Corse, The Wall Street Journal, February 22, 2021.
Getting sued is sexy.
Some crave that as a necessary part of their creating or enhancing a sense of being a celebrity. Yes, the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Syndrome. In an earlier interview with Forbes, Lindell explicitly said that he welcomed the filing of a lawsuit by Dominion.
Of course, Lindell might have felt that way in the interest of his mission to prove there had been something very wrong in the 2020 election. And/or, that development would keep him and his contentions of election fraud in the news. It certainly has.
The litigation is "US Dominion, et al. v. My Pillow and Michael J. Lindell." Here is a copy of the complaint.
That lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia, alleges defamation. That is, "The Big Lie," as Dominion refers to it.
In public statements, ranging from social media to a two-hour film, the litigation alleges that the defendant indicated that the election was fraudulent. That was even though he allegedly knew that the facts did not support that.
Relying on the courts to trigger reform is nothing new. Consumer activist Ralph Nader leveraged that as a major tool. In addition, he organized grassroots movement such as the Nader Raiders.
Media outlets are likely waiting for what other ways Lindell will use to get attention for his point of view.
Meanwhile, the business community and experts in public relations could be wondering how much damange he could be inflicting on the revenue for his business and the My Pillow brand. Of course, the jobs of the My Pillow employees could be at-stake. Already, big-box retailers carry lower-priced competitors for the My Pillow official brand.
There is also the question: Is somthing else going on here, in addition to a cause and perhaps a longing for celebrity?
What one often hears "in the rooms," that is substance-abuse recovery meetings, is about the pattern of those with addictive tendencies to build something up, only to tear it down. An objective in healing is to understand and halt that seeming self-destructive trait. Some finger substance abuse as the disease of self-hate.
Lindell has made it known that he has a history of addiction.
