2020 had been hard on associates at law firms. Agreed there weren't the layoffs of 2008 -2009 but there was profound employment insecurity. In addition there were paycuts. Also, partners were poaching their work. That left them without assignments and living in dread of a stealth layoff - that is, being cut loose for supposed performance reasons.
Now, if the law market continues its profitable 2020 pattern (a big if, given COIVD's latest global round of havoc), associates can push back, reports Law.com. They can make new demands. They can leave. They can badmouth their former employer (in a totally legal manner) in their next job. They can steer business away from where they perceived they had suffered and to the more comfortable work setting.
Already, 44 associates have left Boies Schiller. According to Glassdoor, employees there rate working at the firm 3.2 out of a possible 5. That tends to be on the low side for an elite law firms.
