Sure, you can go to court to battle age bias in the U.S. labor market.
But, meanwhile, you starve.
MarketWatch describes another route to take after being forced out of your job (probably because as a seasoned worker you were highly paid).
It's to become employed in manufacturing.
The jobs are there. Many of high-tech or just technical. They include programmer, quality control, inspector, assembler, and set up technician.
The age bias doesn't seem to be there. The aging are finding it a new kind of employment safe harbor.
Salary ranges from $35K to $65K. Some can get near 6 figures.
Certification takes about nine months. Those study programs are often available at the community college or a career institute. And, as with becoming trained to be a long distance truck driver, the tuition is quite affordable. Sometimes the business hiring those graduates will reimburse some of that tuition.
Since parts of the manufacturing industry had been declared essential, aging workers who retrained for that sector remained employed during most of COVID-19.
This option is replacing retraining to become a long distance truck driver. Since tuition for that is about $7K or less (free if you were willing to work for a company two years), it had been a solid second career for white collars who had lost their careers during The Great Recession. Currently, though, the industry is facing hard times. Also self driving trucks are becoming a reality.
The Next on entering the field of manufacturing? Research where training is offered in your location. Loans and scholarships are available.
