Totally predictable.
The results of the two-year study of mental health at Harvard Law indicated what anyone who had walked through the corridors of those buildings would pick up. And that's the overall soul sickness. And it's not a whole lot different from the lack of a sense of well-being in myriad law schools.
Law.com provides the details.
- 60% of those surveyed showed signs of depression, ranging from mild to severe.
- 54% indicated anxiety, also ranging from moderate to incapacitating.
- 40% woke up often not feeling well-rested.
- 37% engaged in problem drinking.
No surprise either, the powers that be at Harvard Law School indicated they would address this situation. But, in prestigious institutions the toxicity causing the emotional distress is usually embedded in the culture. There are all euphemisms used to conceal it. In academia those include "pursuit of excellence" and "maintenance of standards."
If the culture of Harvard Law School really changed it wouldn't be Harvard Law School any more. No one is going to let that happen. Therefore, sweet agony will continue.
Full Disclosure: When I was a 1L at Harvard Law School, the experience was out of another dimension. I had never encountered anything like it, not even in my doctoral studies at the University of Michigan.
