The risk-taker he is, Apple co-founder - Steve Wozniak - invested in the new cryptocurrency bitcoin.
That was when tokens were still at a low market value: $700. Today, that investment would have totaled about $71,400.
But, as Wozniak told the attendees of the Times' Global Summit, he's out of what would have been a windfall profit. The guy had become a victim of fraud.
CNBC reports the Wozniak assumed he was transacting the sale of his bitcoins.
But it turned out that the buyer was using a stolen credit card. And immediately after the purchase, cancelled payment. Given that the credit card had been stolen, there is no way for Wozniak to have that made good.
Of course, there is compassion for anyone who has been a victim of fraud. However, fortunately, this particular conned human being can absorb the loss. Estimates have it that Wozniak is worth $100 million.
