Did Sweet Anna marry a murderer, actually a double one?
In the fifth season of "Downton Abbey," which starts this Sunday, law firms can assign their private investigators to sort out the clues. Since there has been a second murder, associated with the upright Mr. Bates, we have started wondering if he also did in his first wife.
We are also wondering if the Earl, who helped Mr. Bates with the first murder charge, will begin to get suspicious. It's unusual that any non-marginal human being becomes ensnared in two murders.
The plot line will get even more entangled if Anna becomes pregnant. Can the household budget, which is becoming strained, afford to keep her on and provide nanny services for the child? After all, if Mr. Bates is convicted of the latest murder and is off to the slammer or gallows, the family could develop a bad taste for the whole ball of wax, including the two love birds and their offspring. Even Mary could turn on Anna.
The fifth season could bring out the worst in lots of people.
