Fact, Not Fiction
The feud was Shakespearean in its long history, intensity, and ability to cause deep divisions in a society.
The setting was a one group of apartments in a 600-unit rental complex in Eastern Ohio.
I was a double agent, carrying gossip to both sides. It was because I was a relatively new resident that I was able to take on this role.
For more than five years, it was contended, the alleged miscreant preyed on neighbors in that section of about 120 apartments.
In addition to keying there were supposed acts of spite such as pulling up items from neighbors' garden patches, moving those beach type chairs from patios to the end of the complex, and lite stalking.
Because there were no cameras, complaints to the property management and police went no where. Those who perceived themselves as victims simply had to move. Meanwhile, that section of the apartment complex divided into sides. I got and passed on the dirt.
The situation came to a crisis when one woman whose car had received more than $3k damage in keying filed a complaint with the court. Observing all legalities, the property management relocated the suspected miscreant out of that section to another apartment. Since there were no eye witnesses and no camera footage, no, she couldn't be evicted. Her apartment is in a new part of the complex, so is nicer than her previous one.
In court, at the bench trial, the judge picked up that the neighbor making the complaint did not actually observe the keying being done. Yet she had testified that she did.
The alleged keyer was acquitted. Since I am from a family with various varieties of mental illness, I never have put the knock on aberrant behavior. I was the one who helped her move her stuff to her new apartment.
Will there be perjury charges against the woman who sought justice? As yet, that's not a known. There's a rumor, which I quickly transmitted, that she might move. Is there a possibility that her lease will not be renewed, after stirring up so much trouble in the complex? The pursuit of justice can bite you in the rear.
The gardener now has to contend with deer and several other kinds of creatures nibbling at his hard work. Apparently the deer discovered this source of food and let the animal kingdom in on the find. We residents now have a kind of free zoo to enjoy. I never liked that particular guy so I stand there and smirk.
Chairs stay in-place. I have a hunch the alleged victims miss the drama of The Moved Chair.
One side is railing about the flaws in the legal system. Another heaps praise on the U.S. court system.
I have emerged as an important component in everyone's network.
As happens in tribes, a new source of conflict will arise. I will wiggle my way into that. Feuds provide infinite copy for writers. Yes, in addition to coaching, I still operate creating content as a profit center.
