Now, that has changed for some.
After a few years they may do a lateral and go for partnership at another law firm. Or, they could opt for a job, which might be less demanding in hours, as an inhouse in a corporation. The original law firm which had brought them aboard loses out of what it had invested in training and development.
One solution has evolved.
As The American Lawyer reports, New York based Weil, Gotshal Manges has reduced the period of time usually required to be selected as partner to 7.5 years. The plan is that associates will have the motivation to hang around that long to find out if they are invited to join the golden circle.
Will the initiative be effective? Watchers will only know in the future.
