Many in the Manhattan Supreme Court courtroom yesterday likely wondered: What had gone so wrong in the life of Rick and Laura McDermott's son Cameron? Their photo is to the left. Here is the media coverage.
There, Cameron wept and apologized to his victims.
After a plea deal, he had been sentenced to 10 years. Also, he will have to register as sex offender. His crimes included drugging, raping, and then video-taping women from 2010 to 2013.
His wealthy, socially prominent parents had passed onto to him good looks, a trust fund, a prep school education, and the ability to transact the sale of a complex product like medical devices.
Yet, he deviated from the norm in ways society does not forgive. Instead of bringing great joy to his parents he will spend his sentence in prison and life afterward as a despised outlier. Currently, he is 32 years old. So, his very presence can torment his parents for decades.
If Rick, who had been the number-one man at a bond brokerage firm, and Laura have kind, compassionate friends, they will be sheltered in their daily routine in Florida from this tragedy. If not, some will shun them for supposed bad parenting - or simply bad genes.
This blog hopes that Cameron's parents can find inner peace. The "sins" of the child have befallen them.
