The story lines for "Law & Order SVU" are, as the saying goes, "ripped from the headlines."
So, no surprise, last night's plot focused on two interrelated national problems. They are the opioid crisis and the extreme over-billing by rehabs and sober houses.
The emotional kicker in this is that the birth murder of Olivia Benson's adopted child had been a drug addict.
Benson has difficulty bearing witness to how hard it is for pill addicts to get help and, even when they do, the relapse rate is about 80%.
In addition, Benson recognizes that good mothers can have addicted children. Through that epiphany she can finally let Noah's biological grandmother into their lives. Her heart softens as she encounters so many mothers who would do anything to help their addicted daughters - and can't.
Among the exposes about the inflated bills the rehab industry cooks up had been the one on "60 Minutes." The Obama Administration made addiction a covered service and the greedy moved right in. Unfortunately, too many young addicts died as a result of that not-caring. They are still dying.
