Now the elite Brearley, based in Manhattan, joins Choate, Rosemary Hall, Horace Mann, and Poly Prep in being outed as the setting for sexual abuse of students. Here is the coverage by Katie Van Syckle at New York Magazine.
The typical scenario for the now-familiar School for Scandal saga is the release of a report. Usually that happens because graduates from way back when can't shake the aftermath of what had occurred. An investigation follows. Then comes the report which documents that sexual harassment and actual sexual relations were going on.
In the Brearley situation, the timeline is long: the 1950s until the 1990s. The inappropriate behavior ranged from sexual comments and unwanted kissing to teacher-student intercourse.
In response to this outing, Brearley has notified law enforcement in the locations in which those former teachers are now working. Also their schools have been alerted.
The amazing thing is that instructors assumed they had a right to cross the line, including those in sexual boundaries, when interacting with students. One might have thought they would be restrained by the wealth and influence of the parents.
