Even The Wall Street Journal, owned by the Murdochs, has reported that Bill O'Reilly is likely on the way out. Fox News expert Gabriel Sherman gave us the details why the situation is darkening for O'Reilly.
Here is the latest from New York Magazine.
By today, we have moved on to wondering the odds for a comeback by O'Reilly. They don't look good.
The ability to come back is closely correlated with why the players fell from grace.
Currently, gender issues, including alleged sexual harassment, have become the sin that won't be forgiven. Every era has one of those. In old-line Hollywood it was violating the then-moral code for star behavior. Even through Fatty Arbuckle was acquitted twice of any sexual crime against Virginia Rappe, his career never recovered.
Former head of Fox News Roger Ailes was forced out because of alleged sexual harassment. A cunning player, he seemed to assess the odds of a comeback in the New York Metro area as hopeless. He sold his real estate and his newspapers and hightailed it to Florida.
O'Reilly can 't be let off the hook. That's just the way things are now. His lawyer Marc E. Kawowitz hasn't seemed to help matters by using inflated rhetoric about character assassination. We roll our eyes.
O'Reilly's book "Old School" is still a best-seller. Right now it's #21 on Amazon. Before he went on vacation, his ratings were also way up on Fox News. But, that's the expected gawker phenomenon. We crane out heads to catch sight of catastrophe.
But our necks get tired. And, O'Reilly is no longer of interest. Can he find a landing place in a conservative organization? The smart money is likely not betting on it.
Meanwhile, our attention moves to getting news of what other careers collapse at Fox News because of The End of O'Reilly.
