When the Verizon deal goes through, Yahoo will be Altaba, headed by Thomas McInerney.
Whether Marissa Mayer will have a role in Altaba has not yet been made public. But, she could receive a $23 million severance package.
Like now-distressed Theranos' founder Elizabeth Holmes, Mayer had been a darling of the media.
She was not only attractive, had fashion down cold and was a player. She had a STEM background. What put all that over the top when she was hired to head Yahoo she was pregnant. That made for good angles on coverage of her.
Then, as with Holmes, the media turned on her. Both she and Holmes were unable to produce results.
What will happen to both of them?
Facing so many lawsuits, Theranos could wind up filing for bankruptcy. Finally, Holmes will have to stop playing in that sandbox. With her cunning and charisma, though, she might be able to put together another startup.
If Mayer has no role in Altaba, she might launch her own enterprise. Or she could become part of a foundation associated with STEM.
But, even if they land on their feet with A Next, both Mayer and Holmes are damaged goods. Fortunately, there are so many women in leadership that their disappointing performance hasn't impeded our professional progress.
