In this era of fear of terrorism, especially the domestic kind, public opinion is against trying to understand the mind and motivations of the Boston Bomber. Few are willing to consider why a young man with a promising future risked it all.
This is unfortunate. There's a story in that terrifying saga. Maybe one day one of his lawyers will disclose the inner life of a man now condemned by the court to death. Just as Sigmund Freud learned so much about human nature from aberrant behavior, our society could gain insight into the values of terrorism. The Boston Bomber's life should be spared just to leave that door open.
