The tragic tipping point in Katrina was that the victims of the hurricane were separated from their animal companions. There was the poignant tale of the boy being shipped off to Houston who was not allowed to bring Snowball on the bus. He cried so hard that he vomited.
Those of us who value the human-animal companion bond got into action. Immediately, we lobbied the media and our federal and state representatives to change the rules. We were heard. In order to get FEMA money, shelters had to allow pets.
For Sandy, THE NEW YORK POST reports, at the 65 New York City shelters, those entering can bring their pets. During crisis, people need their pets and the pets need the people.
