As the new season of "The Good Wife" opens, the vital signs for law firm Lockhart Gardner are awful. The firm is $60 million in debt. David the Chief Rainmaker has taken the exit.
The firm is so desperate that it takes on as a client Nick, Kalinda's ex husband. He's a sleazy character but the firm has no margin for financial error.
What about the worst case scenario and the firm folds?
Since Peter and Alicia could reconcile she could probably get another job practicing law or related to law in another setting. Peter is on an upward trajectory and has a gold-plated network. Alicia would do fine.
Cary might be able to slip back into some government job. However, unlike Alicia he lacks contacts. He was given the boot the first time from the law firm because Alicia had the contacts to bring in new business. It's not improbable that he could join the growing number of associates who are knocked out of the box and won't be able to get back in.
Diane has all her liberal contacts so she could land in some capacity in a nonprofit. Likely she wouldn't like the work since she is used to walking the high wire. One solution would be for her to marry the Marlboro Man and start a new kind of life.
Will is damaged goods. He had been suspended for six months from practicing law. Yet, we all know that practicing law is the glue which holds him together. My hunch is that he is a borderline personality unable to establish mature relationships. He keeps running through women. If he cannot land on his feet with another job practicing law I wouldn't rule out a suicide.
The drama of this law firm's financial problems mirrors the struggle the legal sector has been having since the Crash of 2007. Overall, the industry hasn't been able to bounce back.
