Several years ago I talked informally to a former corrections psychologist. I asked to explain the dynamics for this kind of obviously self-destructive behavior. He recounted the case of a middle manager at a utility company in the Hartford, Connecticut metro area. His employer warned him not to bring up on his computer child porn. He continued to do so and lost his job. Surely, with his compensation he could have afforded a computer at home. Why, I asked the psychologist? He explained the behavior as a combo platter of compulsion and the need to create artificial excitement.

None of these men are unsophisticated. They were and are aware that federal authorities are all over the web trying to nail such miscreants. Yet, they log on anyway.
