In the law firm culture, you underperform and you're gone. In corporate legal departments you underperform and you are immersed in understanding. A better fit will be sought for you.
Essentially those are the two very different worlds Mark Herrmann keeps depicting. He did it again Monday in his column on Abovethelaw.com. Since most of us won't get to live in both worlds as he does, we have to accept his assessment. But we sure can ask: Why are the two so different. It isn't like corporate, so under scrutiny by constituencies ranging from shareholders to the media, can operate like pre-K. Also the difference can't be explained in terms of fear of lawsuits. Those kinds of employment suits also happen at law firms.
Some ambitious Ph.D. sociology student could make this question the subject of a dissertation.
