In the early 1990s, a WASPY guy at a Greenwich, Connecticut 12-step meeting asked me if I was "a friend of Bill" (code for recovering something, anything) or looking for a husband. It was well known at the time that COSMO founder Helen Gurley Brown advised readers to drop by Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in upscale neighborhoods to bed down men who could become their rich husbands.
Actually, Brown was shrewd. Men at those meetings probably had lost their marriages and were in the market for another one. Men fare better tethered to spouses. There are many marriages in AA and just as many AA babies who grow up associating recitation of the Our Father with Oreo cookies and coffee with tons of cream and sugar.
Now Brown has moved on to that great mating game in the sky. She died at age 90. The world owes her much.
