Historically, the Roman Catholic Church was associated with the Democrats which had been the party of the poor and immigrants. Part of how that religion made such inroads in urban areas like Jersey City, New Jersey was that it aligned with Democratic leaders like the iconic Frank Hague.
So, it is news that New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan will deliver the prayer at the Republican National Convention after Mitt Romney accepts the nomination. NEW YORK Magazine reports that Dolan noted that his presence at the RNC isn't political. He would also be available to do the prayer at the DNC. However, that could be dicey since the church is suing the Obama Administration. The focus of that litigation is the mandate that the church provide reimbursement for birth control.
Given that the church is on the defense in the U.S. because of the sex abuse scandal, it will be fascinating to observe if alignment with the party of wealth can help rebrand this religious institution. Financially, the church is in trouble in many areas because of the cost of settlements with abuse victims and less money coming in from members. This situation is ideal for a cartoon depicting the catholic church receiving life support from the GOP, dressed as a medical doctor.
Great thought.
