For three days at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, those whose business is associated with legal will attend LegalTech. Since the focus is on technology, some attendees will be there anticipating threats, others opportunity. The topics range from using technology to help cut costs to leveraging it as an offensive weapon in discovery, including for social media, to assess a case early in the game.
A useful introduction to the issues in e-discovery is this white paper "Trends in Electronic Discovery: A Market Perspective" by Brian Babineau of the Enterprise Strategy Group. For many law firms, in-house lawyers, and government agencies, the scope of e-discovery is growing and the attempts to contain the budget for this are not effective. This situation was partly created by the U.S. Supreme Court's amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedures in 2006.
Later this morning I hope to interviewing a panelist at LegalTech.
