The Bureau of Prisons will only say that inmate Bernie Madoff is currently housed in the medical center of the federal prison at Butler, North Carolina. It, reports Amir Efrati in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, won't disclose what he being treated for. What Efrati does mention, and journalists mention things for a reason, is, "About half of the patients a year ago [at that medical center] suffered from mental health issues."
This year, as many recall, there were rumors that Madoff had cancer. The story line was long. It went on and on that he surrendered because he knew he was dying and he wanted to just take the fall, shielding his family and the wealth he acquired for them. Of course, there was no confirmation of that by the Bureau of Prisons.
Meanwhile, last summer another famous miscreant Catholic priest Michael Jude Fay, who had pleaded guilty to embezzling more than a million dollars from his parish St. John's, Darien, Connecticut, died in that same prison of cancer. His hard-partying gay lifestyle made Fay a national anti-hero. People wondered how he got away with all that. When I met with a source after his death, that source alleged the church tolerated Fay's activities because he was an effective fundraiser.
If Madoff is not sick with a physical malady perhaps he is fulfilling the Shakespearean prophecy of how those wheelers and dealers at the top "go wild into the grave." Madoff might have sunk into a depression, had a psychotic break, or, who knows, might have even gone postal.
There's also the possibility that he might just have a boo-boo.
Rascals like Madoff and Fay never fail to fascinate. My first novel is about one of those.
