Comments

The odd thing is that Hauptmann himself, in a subsequent interview with Ellis Parker, said that the ransom handwriting was an exact match for his own and he could not tell them apart. In addition, the first (Nursery) and second notes were once part of the same sheet of paper (5th Ave Linen), showing that whoever took the child also wrote the remaining correspondence. Hauptmann also quit his last paying job over the weekend of April 2nd, 1932, and never sought employment again. He did very well for himself during the Depression, with expensive purchases, custom made suits, and lots of investing in the stock market! I suppose that Thomas Wolfe as the culprit is an improvement over the suggestion that Albert Einstein, of nearby Princeton, was responsible.
