Millennials are suffering disproportionally in terms of layoffs.
In THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, Dana Mattioli reports their jobless rate soared to 9.6% in April 2009 versus 4.9% the previous year. On the other hand, those over-55, the jobless rate was 6.2% at same time versus 3.3% a year earlier.
Clearly, there is a niche within the age discrimination niche. Mattioli details why the young are more vulnerable to being cut and usually for no legitimate aka legally-defensible reason. Unemployed attorneys might band together to form boutiques specializing in filing lawsuits, individual and class action, on behalf of the younger employee.
The niche within niche approach has been proved out by Atlanta, Georgia healthcare public relations and marketing communications agency Dodge. In an overall flat market for public relations, reports Jack O'Dwyer in the May 2009 edition of O'DWYER'S PR REPORT, Dodge's revenue growth was 49%. It focuses on the niche within b-to-b healthcare which is the smaller business one in healthcare technology companies.
