2012: How Many State AGs Will Run for President?
In 2012, the state attorneys general who might run for President of the U.S. won't be breaking new ground. Bill Clinton, who was one of the early activists AGs back in Arkansas, already did that.
What will be new is that by then these public servants who had gone through a dark patch - think Spitzer, Hood, Dann - will have fully redeemed themselves. The media, even publications like LEGAL NEWSLINE which scrutinize state AGs's motivations and behavior, are chock full of their creative and courageous interventions on behalf of The People.
In Massachusetts Martha Coakley is making a big difference in everything from enforcing lead-paint abatement laws against landlords to making it possible to develop abandoned properties. In New York, Andrew Cuomo has made all the right populist moves and without Spitzer's bullying tactics. In Illinois Lisa Madigan is helping to keep folks in their homes by forcing Bank of America's Countrywide to allow mortgages to be re-negotiated.
Question: Will any of these be called up by the new Administration to fill the job of the U.S. AG?
