Excused Absent Network - Probably Not Deep Enough Pocket to be Sued

From the media reports, it doesn't appear that Excused Absence Network is a deep enough pocket to attract lawsuits.  FaceBook it ain't. And it's probably its customers, not this business per se, who could face an criminal prosecution and, if they themselves are deep pockets, litigation.

Here's how Excused Absence operates. For about $25, reports AP writer Angela K. Brown, the Internet-based company provides "excuse notes that appear to come from doctors or hospitals.  Other options includes a fake jury summons or an an authentic-looking funeral service ..." The user takes these templates and fills in, for example, the name and address of a local doctor or the county courthouse.  As psychics, fortune-tellers and advice-givers to the lovelorn do, Excused Absence Network attempts to protect itself from the law with the disclaimer that the notes are "for entertainment purposes only.'

Obvious issues pop up immediately about the kind of legal trouble users can get into.  Already, notes Brown, one woman was arrested when traffic court, where she was supposed to be, checked out her note from a health-care provider.  Another matter is the reputations of the professionals whose names are on the notes.  If the GM plant receives 10 absences excused by Doc X, this practitioner might lose credibility - and more.

The media is giving this business plenty of publicity.  That might just lead to its being investigated and closed down.
