Milwaukee v NL - Trial to answer 3 questions, says Lewis

We all have our ideas what City of Milwaukee v NL Industries is about or why it's taking place.  Lead attorney for the plaintiff Richard Lewis says in his opening arguments that "this is a trial to answer some very basic questions."  Lewis compresses those into three main ones:

  • Is childhood lead poisoning, and has it been, a serious public health problem in Milwaukee?
  • How did this happen in the first place? How did we get here?
  • And, what is the solution to this problem?

He asks the jury to think about these three as they "consider the evidence." He then organizes the rest of his opening statement around these three questions.  Unfortunately, from a stylistic point of view, that makes his narrative less riveting - and perhaps less compelling - than defense attorney Donald Scott's which is less tightly structured.
